How Dangerous Are The Wasps In New Braunfels?

The summertime provides some wonderful opportunities for outdoor activities and get-togethers, and it’s always hard to say no when your kids want to get out and play in the backyard. Warmer weather does bring its own added dangers with it, though, and some of those dangers come in the form of aggressive insects. Stinging insects such as wasps may be important for the environment, but they’re still dangerous to have as backyard guests on your New Braunfels property.

Wasps In New Braunfels

Sometimes it can be tricky to tell if you have wasps plaguing your property, or if it’s a different stinging insect altogether. There are a few different species of wasps found around New Braunfels, and some are more common to find than others:

  • Mud daubers – ½ – 1 inch long, hairless, coloring includes black, yellow, and metallic blue, build mud nests, less aggressive
  • Yellowjackets – roughly ½ an inch long, hairless, black and yellow coloring, commonly build nests in ground cavities, very aggressive
  • Paper wasps – ½ – 1 ½ inch long, hairless, coloring includes orange, reddish-brown, and dark red, build paper nests in trees, bushes, and under the eaves of homes, aggressive
  • Red wasps – roughly an inch long, hairless, red bodies with dark purple wings, build paper nests in trees, bushes, and under the eaves of homes, aggressive

Wasps can occasionally help pollinate, because they do love a sweet flowery treat, but they’re not well known for their pollinating skills. In fact, it’s much more difficult for them to aid in pollination, because they lack the hair that bees have to help them carry it around. Wasps are primarily meat-eaters, and they help gardens by reducing the presence of harmful pests.

While we can all appreciate their hard work in the fields, they’re aggressively defensive of their nests, and they don’t realize that humans aren’t usually a threat to their homes. That’s when things get dangerous for New Braunfels homeowners, especially if you happen to be allergic. Wasps can sting multiple times, and a swarm of attacking wasps can go from painful to deadly really fast.

How To Keep Wasps From Nesting On Your New Braunfels Property

Trying to control the activities of outdoor pests is difficult at best, but there are ways to make your New Braunfels yard less enticing to stinging insects:

  • Fill in ground holes and old rodent nests
  • Refrain from over-watering your garden
  • Seal up any entrance holes that might be present in your siding and roof trim
  • Keep bushes and trees pruned back
  • Avoid over-flowering in your garden
  • Implement specific wasp-deterrent plants in your garden; wormwood, geraniums, eucalyptus, marigolds, citronella, pennyroyal
  • Attach a tight-fitting chimney cap if necessary
  • Add a fake nest to your outdoor décor; wasps are territorial and will refuse to nest near another colony
  • Keep tight-fitting lids on outside trash cans, and clean any outdoor food prep and eating areas immediately after use
